DISTRIBUTION: This species is widely distributed throughout the holarctic region; in Europe, it is primarily distributed in the Mediterranean basin and further east at the same latitudes. The habitats it lives in are significantly varied, but all are characterised by a mild or sub-tropical climate. It is a migratory species.
IDENTIFYING FEATURES: The nycticorax is a medium-sized heron with a compact body and relatively short legs. The adult has a black back and a light-coloured lower body; the top of its head is black and has a falling long white crest; red eyes; a black, tough beak; and a white belly. The young are brownish with lighter patches on the back and on the wings. It is not very elegant when in flight. It is mainly active at night time and at dusk.
HABITAT: Swampy areas and river shores with thick vegetation; swamps with trees; rice fields; and water meadows.
FOOD: Fish, amphibians, and insects.
NESTING: The nycticorax often nests with similar species in bushes, on trees, and sometimes even in thickets. The breeding season lasts from May to July. The nest is flat, small, and lined with dry grass. The 3-5 eggs that are usually laid are brooded by both sexes.
